Angry Penguins. 1944 Autumn Number to Commemorate the Australian Poet Ern Malley. Introduction by Max Harris

Publisher: Melbourne, Reed & Harris, 1944. First edition
Description: pp108, b/w illus; 4to, Sidney Nolan illustrated wrappers. Erata slip present. Wrappers very foxed with curled edges, back wrapper loose (but all there). Externally a poor copy, but internally fair.

The first edition of the famous literary hoax, the 33 page poem `The Darkening Eclectic’ by the unknown Malley. In reality this was written by the established poets James McAuley and Harold Stewart. The editor, Max Harris, fell for the hoax, and wrote an elegy for the poet as well as an introduction to the poem. Australia’s leading artists and writers contributed to this, Australia’s leading (only?) modernist journal at the time
