Lady Charlotte Schreiber [1812-1895], daughter of the 9th Earl of Lindsay, shocked Society twice. First by marrying the Welsh industrialist John Guest, and, after his death, the much younger Charles Schreiber. An avid scholar and linguist, she spoke Welsh, Arabic, Hebrew and Persian, as well as the more conventional European languages. After her marriage to Schreiber, they travelled widely in Europe, collecting ceramics, fans, board games and playing cards, which they donated to London’s V&A
