Lawson trained as a surveyor in London, and bought a commission in the New South Wales Corps, arriving in Sydney on the `Royal Admiral’ in 1800. He married Sarah Leadbeater who had been transported in the `Cornwallis’ in 1801. Their union was happy (eleven children were born to them) and prosperous, with the acquisiiton of numerous properties in Sydney and as far west as Bathurst
