Original autograph letter, signed `Howden’, from Grimston Park, Tadcaster, Sept.20.1827. A long letter, to an unnamed correspondent, giving an opinion about an estate near Thirsk offered for sale. The letter is not very encouraging, being sceptical above all of the value of the woods and the need for surveys which would probably not repay their expense. Howden sends the letter to c/- H L Robins, who appears to be an agent or secretary and who sends on the letter with many extra notes about names and prices

John Francis Cradock, 1st Baron Howden (1759-1839) had an illustrious career as a soldier. He commanded the British army in Portugal, handing over to the Duke of Wellington in 1808. Howden bought Grimston Park in 1812. An interesting business letter
