Harrington (1611-1677) published his great republican work,” Oceana” in 1656. Described by the “Oxford Companion to English Literature” as “part historical analysis, part Utopia, and part a written constitution”, it was an intended counter to Thomas Hobbes’s “Leviathan”. David Hume described Harrington’s concept as “the only valuable model of a commonwealth that has yet been offered to the public”. The collection by John Toland (1670-1722), the Irish Deist, was first published in 1700 and then in 1737
