This fictionalised account of her grandparents arriving from Irelamd in the 1830s, and taking up land in the Monaro country, won the S. H. Prior Memorial Prize in 1936. Franklin was involved in the feminist movement through friendship with Rose Scott and Vida Goldstein, and the National Women’s Trade Union League. During her life (1879-1954) she supported and encouraged Australian writers, and on her death bequeathed her estate to establish the Miles Franklin Literary Award
